a guide to using Needham Market Internet Cafe

Who may use it?
There are no restrictions on who can use the computers. You don't need to be a certain age, and you don't need to be from Needham Market to make use of our computers or internet connection. Anyone wishing to use the computers must sign in to enable us to keep statistics for future funding.

There are no age restrictions on users, but parents must accompany children under the age of nine. Parents and guardians of children are responsible for their children’s use of the internet through the Cafe's connection. Needham Market Internet Cafe is not responsible for content accessed through the Cafe's internet connection.

How much does it cost?
Access is completely free. Printing is charged at 10p per sheet. Printing for school homework is free.

How do I book a session?
Use of the computer is via a 'first-come, first-served' drop-in system, although sessions may be booked in advance. If you are late for a booked session your computer will remain available for 10 minutes. After that the computer will be open for general use. A session is half an hour but there is no maximum number of sessions. Limitations on use will only occur where there are people waiting to use the machines. Whilst the machine is booked in your name you are responsible for any searches made or sites accessed.

How do I use the computer?
To start using the computer simply sit down and move the mouse to bring the monitor out of standby. Our computers are just like a home PC so if you're used to Microsoft Windows you should have no trouble getting started. If you want to browse the web just click 'start' and then 'internet' to launch the web browser.

When you finish using a computer please "Exit" from any programs you have been using, but do not log off or shutdown the machine. Any personal information entered while browsing the web is deleted automatically when you close the web browser. If you are worried about personal files that may be left on the computer you can ask a member of staff to restart the computer. This will remove all changes and delete any files you may have saved. To store files you can bring in your own floppy disk/CD/DVD/USB drive or purchase one from us (when we have them in stock!).

The internet is not a secure medium. Take care if you are entering bank account details or other personal information. If you use the computers to order goods and services, you do so at your own risk. We use a variety of techniques to protect users from spyware, data theft, and even aggressive advertising, however Needham Market Internet Cafe can bear no responsibility for loss of personal data or information while using the computers or internet connection.

Access is on a self-help basis. Staff are voluntary and are not trained to help with IT problems; however, basic support may be given. Please speak with a staff member if you encounter any problems, or if you have any suggestions that could improve the Internet Cafe.

Use of Software / Hardware
Some features of the computers are limited for security purposes. If the computer won't let you do something you want to do, ask a member of staff.

You are allowed to download but you should speak to a member of staff if you want to download files over 200MB.

You should speak with a member of staff if you want to connect any hardware to our machines or network, although USB drives can be attached freely via the USB ports on the front of the computer.

Internet Cafe equipment must not be unplugged at any time.
